WristRF

Project Name: WristRF

Device: Prototype of wearable identification device

Purpose:  a novel registration system for hospitals in order to address a major hospital issue about patient tracking and patient ID. We found out that the existing patient identification system is not efficient and it is stil unsufficient to help nurses and doctors. The existing barcode IDs on paper-wristband is not able to solve problems sush as being wrong patient in a wrong surgery room. Also, nurses waste their time to scan the barcodes everytime that they need to provide medication to the patients. They are not able to find a patient who left his room. So, the actual objective is life-saving, reduce the patient checking time of hospital staff and alarm for any potential patient loss.

Project Goals:

Introducing a new identfication system based on a Bluetooth Low Energy wireless communication technology, we realized the value to replace the paper-wristbands with a new type of Bluetooth enabled wristband for each patient. We can eliminate the need for compicated computer systems with attached barcode scanners and reduce the waste of nurse time to identify the patients.

Features:

  • Blueototh 4.0 communication

  • Ambient Temperature Sensor

  • Replaceable battery

  • iBeacon fuction

  • Replaceable battery

  • Battery life for up to 2 years

Basic Use:

The proposed novel indentification system includes just Bluetooth LE enabled wristbands capable to transmit the patient’s health medical record to a smartphone or tablet of anyone is authorized by the hospital administarion. When a member of the hospital staff passes in front of a patient with a tablet, a Electronic Health Record (EHR)  profile pops-up on the tablet showing indications like current health status, latest recieved medication, perscription, health history, etc. There is only need for a patient’s hand and a tablet. When a new patient comes to the patient registration office of the hospital, they register him/her with the Bluetooth wristband which is related with his/her EHR. Then, after any patient’s recover, that wristband can be reseted and setup again for another patient. So, the bluetooth wristbands can be more robust, washable and reusable that makes the patients ID system more cost effective for hospital than the sigle-use paper-wristbands.

Benefits:

  • The reprogramming and setting-up procudure takes place only by the hospitals’ registration office machines.

  • Only authorized hospital staff are able to have access to patients EHR.

  • No patients data stored on the wristband.

  • Encrypted Bluetooth Communication

  • Proximity capabilities (easily configurable proximity sensation)

  • Simple use (stand in front of the patient)

  • No risk of lossing data

  • Recyclable

  • Patientas tracking capabilities

  • Optional Alarm capabilities

Project Outline:

The actual system works on a very simple model. The proposed wristbands operates as bluetooth tag transmitting a unique ID number which the stored on its memory. This ID number is registered for a unique patient and it is connected to his/her EHR profile. When the patient leaves the hospital after a full recover the wristband can be reprogrammed for a new patient with a different unique ID. Each patient’s wristband operates only as trigger and authentication key to EHR software that runs only on staff’s smart devices.
